South Shore CPA & Tax Services

Local accounting, tax planning, and bookkeeping for Plymouth, Hingham, Marshfield, Duxbury, Scituate, and surrounding South Shore towns. 30+ years experience.

The South Shore Is a Different Economy Than Cape Cod

Less seasonal. More commuter. More Boston-adjacent. A large share of our South Shore clients live in Plymouth, Hingham, Marshfield, Duxbury, or Scituate and either run a local service business or commute up to Boston and have a side venture down here. Some have a rental property on the Cape they need to deal with. Some inherited a family business. Most have all of the above.

That mix produces a kind of tax complexity that doesn’t fit neatly into the Cape’s seasonal-business mold or Boston’s W-2-only model. We see it constantly: high earners with side businesses, retirees with rental income, owners of working trades businesses, professionals with K-1 income from a partnership stake, founders of small consultancies. Each one needs different planning.

Services Built for South Shore Complexity

Steven M. Ellard, CPA brings the full year-round set of services South Shore households and businesses need:

  • Combined business + personal tax planning — the South Shore is full of W-2 plus 1099 plus rental plus K-1 situations. We coordinate the full picture so nothing gets missed.
  • S-corp tax preparation — for the consultants, contractors, and professionals who incorporated when their side income hit a certain level.
  • Rental property accounting — Schedule E, depreciation schedules, the Massachusetts short-term rental tax. We handle Cape rentals owned by South Shore residents constantly.
  • Monthly bookkeeping — for working trades businesses, professional service firms, and growing small businesses across the South Shore.
  • Payroll — W-2 and 1099, quarterly filings, year-end forms.
  • S-corp election & reasonable salary planning — for the Schedule C businesses that have outgrown sole-proprietor status.
  • Retirement & estate-adjacent planning — for South Shore households with multi-generational considerations.

South Shore Client Profiles We See Most

Three patterns show up over and over in our South Shore client base. First: the Boston commuter with a side business — a consultancy, a real estate practice, a software contracting business — running on the side of a W-2 day job. Tax planning here is about coordinating the W-2 with the 1099 income and managing self-employment tax efficiently.

Second: the working trades or local services owner — landscaper, electrician, plumber, contractor, gym owner, restaurant operator — running an established South Shore small business. Tax planning here is about S-corp election, reasonable salary, quarterly estimates, and clean monthly books.

Third: the retiree or near-retiree with rental income, retirement account distributions, and often a small consulting practice on the side. Tax planning here is about coordinating Social Security timing, RMDs, rental cash flow, and qualified charitable distributions.

How We Work With South Shore Clients

We’re based in Hyannis on Cape Cod, which is a 45-60 minute drive south of most South Shore towns. The distance is intentional — close enough to know the area, far enough to be outside the immediate local network of any one town. For most of our South Shore clients, the working relationship runs by email, video call, and a secure file-share portal. We’re available in person when it matters, asynchronous when it doesn’t.

This setup is how we’ve been able to serve South Shore households and businesses for decades from a Cape Cod base. The technology is fine. What matters is whether the CPA actually understands your specific situation, returns calls promptly, and gets the work done right the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which South Shore towns do you serve?
All of them. Most of our South Shore clients are in Plymouth, Hingham, Marshfield, Duxbury, Scituate, Cohasset, Hanover, Norwell, Pembroke, Kingston, Halifax, and the surrounding area. We also serve Wareham, Bourne, Carver, and Marion.

What if I have a Cape Cod rental but live on the South Shore?
This is one of the most common situations we handle. The rental is on Schedule E (and possibly subject to MA short-term rental tax), your W-2 is from a Boston employer, and your personal residence is in Hingham or wherever. We coordinate all three in one return so the deductions line up correctly.

Do you do quarterly tax planning, or only annual returns?
Quarterly is the default for our business clients and any household with significant 1099, K-1, or rental income. Annual-only doesn’t catch problems early enough.

What’s the typical engagement cost?
It varies. Personal-only returns run a few hundred dollars. Business clients with bookkeeping, payroll, S-corp returns, and quarterly planning are typically $250-$600/month with a flat fee, no hourly surprises.
